The city of Cologne is the 4th largest in Germany, and the largest along the Rhine, making it a central tourist spot and cultural hub in Germany. It is known as Germany's capital of carnivals, making it an exciting place to attend festivals and the world-renowned German Christmas markets.

Variety of courses offered in English. Haskayne BComm students must take their common core courses at the University of Calgary. On exchange students can take two senior commerce and/or non-commerce options, and/or a maximum of 2 concentration courses (not ACCT/PLMA). They are required to maintain full time status while on exchange, so they must take the equivalent of at least 3 half courses (18 ECTS) and up to 5 half courses (30 ECTS).

Ensure you review your course selection with a Haskayne exchange advisor at least 2 months before leaving for your exchange to confirm transfer credit.

Please consult the host university's website to create a tentative list of 60 ECTS credits per semester that you are interested in taking. This list may be based on the current or previous year's courses.

Course conversion: 6 ECTS = 3 units at UCalgary (IE one half-course equivalent).

Please note that all English-taught courses listed have an 'early leaver option’ in Fall term. This means guest students can finish their exchange term by mid-December. Students will need to complete additional assignments to receive full credits for all courses.

The semester dates at Cologne are quite different from the UCalgary:

  • UCalgary Fall term = Winter semester: October to February (it is possible to complete course work and exams by end of December to leave early – please contact the Haskayne exchange advisor for more details).
  • UCalgary Winter term = Summer Semester: April to July
  1. Costs

    Exchange students pay their tuition and academic fees to the University of Calgary. Other expenses are paid directly to the service provider. Tuition and fees are due by the regular tuition and fee deadline at the University of Calgary, regardless of when the exchange term begins.

    Also, remember to include things like visas, insurance, vaccinations etc in your budget planning.

    Students are sometimes also expected to pay fees to their host institution. This information is given to exchange students by the host institution, after they have applied and been accepted for an exchange.

  2. Funding

    Did you know that you can take your UCalgary funding with you on exchange? 
    Since you remain a degree seeking student at UCalgary while on exchange you remain eligible for any awards and scholarships you are eligible to receive from the university as well as student loans.

    Our office administers the International Study Travel Grant for students travelling on approved UCalgary study programs that are credit bearing. The amount changes year to year as the money is split evenly between qualified applicants. Students may only receive the study travel grant once.
